Denver 2011 –Eureka FFA Livestock Judging Team Competes at National Western Stock Show and Rodeo
The Eureka FFA livestock judging team competed at the National Western Livestock Show and Rodeo on January 8th in Denver Colorado. The team was selected by the Illinois State FFA Association to represent Illinois in the competition based on its Runner-up Performance at last spring’s State FFA Contest held at the University of Illinois. The team spent the last 3 months practicing for this prestigious event. The National Western show is one of the longest running livestock shows in the country. It is often referred to as the super bowl of the livestock industry. The team competed against other state championship caliber teams from all over the country. On Saturday, the team evaluated some of the highest quality livestock many of them have ever seen. The morning consisted of evaluating 10 different classes made up of cattle, hogs, sheep and goats. In the afternoon, the team gave 6 sets oral reasons on the classes they evaluated in the morning. The team consisting of Dan Leman (Sr), Gavin Arvin ( Sr), Brad Krumholz (Jr.) , Katie Krumholz (Fr) and Josh Robinson ( So) placed 11th overall. The team was 2nd overall in the Swine Division, 9th overall in the Sheep division, 4th overall in the Goats Division and 6th overall in the Reasons Division. Individually, Katie Krumholz placed 8th overall in sheep, Dan Leman placed 9th overall in Swine, and Brad Krumholz placed 8th overall in Goats. The trip offered a great learning experience to all the team members by allowing them to evaluate such outstanding livestock. Other team members making the trip were, Allie Miller and Andrea Hunt. The team could not have had this opportunity without the support of the schools administration, school board, and community sponsors. The trip was funded by these great sponsors: Gold Level- Reel Livestock Center-Dickenson Angus, Silver Level-Carroll Oil-Chad Leman- Sam Leman Eureka-Blackmer Farms- Windmill Creek Ranch-Yoder Oil –EHS Solutions -, Bronze Sponsor-McKenna Vet Services-Martin Equipment-Kelsey Farms. Thank to everyone who supported the Eureka FFA Livestock Judging Team this winter.

FFA Christmas Meeting
‘Tis the Season to be Jolly!
By: Ellynne Vance
In order to spread some hope and Christmas cheer this holiday season the FFA hosted their Christmas party this past Thursday night, the 9th of Dec.
The 60 members present kicked off the night by collecting cans door-to-door to help benefit the FFA Tons of Fun Canned Food Drive. After collecting the cans the FFA members returned to the High School to weigh and sort them. The members collected a total of about 670 lbs.
The members then proceeded on to a night filled with fun, food, and friends! The FFA officer team updated the members on what is currently going on in their chapter and encouraged members to get involved. To wrap up the evening everyone assembled in the high school auditorium to watch a festive movie.
In honor and thanks to the armed forces that are serving overseas during the holiday, the Eureka FFA in conjunction with the Illinois FFA are making and shipping care packages to the troops. The FFA collected more than enough items to fill the 19 boxes they had, plus a few extra!
The night was packed full with lots of laughter and Christmas cheer. From collecting cans to eating cookies the Eureka FFA members enjoyed lots of fun and fellowship this Christmas season.

Eureka FFA attends national convention
Potential; the possibility of being or becoming. For an FFA member there are endless possibilities and they have infinite potential. Those who adorn the world renowned blue corduroy jacket exhibit these qualities of leadership. They look at a situation and see it not for what it is but for what it could become. They look at people and see them not who they are but how great they could become!
Last week our ten local Eureka High School FFA officers had an incredible opportunity to gather together with thousands of other FFA students from across the United States in Indianapolis, Indiana for this year’s National FFA Convention. This year’s theme was infinite potential; it showed us how every single person has the potential to do great things, an unlimited amount of potential. They heard from speakers such as comedian Josh Shipp about how we will face adversity in life, but how to overcome that adversity and use it to our advantage. They also heard from people such as The US Dept. of Education’s Arne Duncan and one of our National FFA officers Bethanay Bohnenbust.
The officers had a great time in Indianapolis going to workshops such as How to Use Conflict Creatively, visiting the cities art and rhythm museums, going to a Lady Antebellum Concert, and a rodeo that the city puts on for the National FFA. They also participated in the career show, learning about growing businesses in the agriculture industry and colleges around the states who have a major focus on agriculture. The officers that went grew not only as a person but as a team collectively and will now bring home what they learned at convention and apply it to our local Eureka FFA chapter.

Eureka FFA Labor Auction
Written by: Ellynne Vance
(Eureka FFA Reporter)
The Eureka FFA hosted it’s annual Labor Auction last Thursday, October 9th, 2010. The Labor Auction is an annual event and is held at Les Reel’s Sale Barn in Congerville, IL. This event is the FFA’s only fundraiser for the entire year. The night got off to a great start with dinner, which was put on by the Eureka FFA Alumni. They served pulled pork sandwiches, chips, applesauce, and lemonade to drink. Katherine Syndram, this year’s FFA Historian and owner of local business Katherine’s Kakes, provided a range of different flavored cupcakes for the evening’s desert. “The chai cupcakes were delicious!” said freshman Jill Stoller.
The auction started at 7pm, with a festive mood in the air. When Ross Wettstein, a recent Eureka High School graduate and past FFA Officer, bought his previous Ag teacher and FFA Advisor, Andy Blackmer, the room filled with laughter. Between sitting in the audience and standing in the sale ring, FFA members of all ages had a fantastic night of fun and making memories to last them a lifetime. This year’s auction was a great success and the funds raised will help the Eureka FFA to continue it’s tradition of creating leaders in the community.

"Go Green" is this years theme
“Going Green” is this year’s theme for Eureka High School. It is also our Homecoming theme as decided by the student council. This initiative came out of last year’s internal review process which produced this reflective question:
How can we, as a school, become more environmentally friendly and reduce our carbon footprint?
After meeting with the class sponsors and Presidents of each class, we have decided to forgo class floats this year for the following reasons:
1. The material used is thrown away and ends up in the dumpster which ultimately ends up in a landfill.
2. In lieu of classes building a float, they will have a fundraising competition during lunch to raise money for a local charity that we haven’t sponsored in the past.
3. One float will be built by all of classes together out of recycled materials. The charities sponsored will be listed on the float with how much money was raised for each one. This is to show unity as a school as well as to give back to our communities.
4. A large majority of the students do not participate in float building on a yearly basis. Most times the number is approx. ten different students total with most being class officers. This is for the entire two-three week period that the float is being built.
5. A combined effort to build a float will only take one week. This will be accomplished the week prior to Homecoming. The students that typically build the float are extremely busy with homework, community activities and extracurricular events so it should free up some of their time.
6. The money used to build a float ($300) can be better spent on the junior prom and senior trip. The class can also decide to donate the money to the charity of their choice.
7. The classes compete to win $200 at the end of the week so spending $300 each on a float puts all of them in the hole. On top of that, the freshman class typically comes to EHS with no money until they have a fundraiser.
Other ideas not associated with float building that help with our “Go Green” initiative include:
1. Spirit shirts for students and staff observed being environmentally friendly.
2. Large pop-bottle shaped containers were purchased to collect plastic bottles at lunch, during events in the gym, and at the football games.
3. The Science Club has renewed its efforts to collect paper products to recycle.
4. The majority of material used at class games will have been recycled. BTW: It will incorporate ideas from “Minute to Win It” and be held in the gym.
5. We are trying to move to more electronic communication and only sending newsletters home to those of you that don’t have an e-mail. BTW: We just finished setting up Skyward to send you this e-mail.
6. We are reducing the amount of color ink that we use to only items that will be kept by the students or used for promotional purposes.
If anyone has any other ideas to help us "Go Green", please contact Rich Wherley at wherleyr@district140.org.

Dance wins summer competition
The Eureka High School Varsity Competitive Dance Team recently attended a Universal Dance Association Camp (UDA) at Illinois State University on July 6-9. The team earned two trophies, qualifying them for National Competition in Orlando, Florida. The EHS Dance Team competed in small varsity with a jazz routine, earning first place. Twenty-three teams competed in both small and large varsity. The EHS Dance Team also earned a Superior Trophy, which double qualified them for Nationals. In the eleven years Rebecca Hack has coached the Dance Team, they have qualified for National Competition nine times. They have earned second and third places trophies, but never a first place qualification. Senior, Allicia Mooberry, also earned her third UDA All-American or All-Star Award. To earn this honor, dancers learn a routine at UDA Camp consisting of Jazz, Pom, and Hip Hop. All-American Candidates are required to choreograph two additional eight counts and perform the routine in front of judges on the third day of UDA Camp. The Competitive Dance Team is coached by Rebecca Hack and Ashleigh Hadfield.

ICC news
All dual credit students who have applied for financial aid at ICC have received letters “Terminating” their financial aid. This is because we have all dual credit students use “Undeclared Major” on their ICC application.
They need to only change their major. They should come to one of the ICC campuses to do this. They may also e-mail Brandy Moore (brandy.moore@icc.edu) asking that their major be changed from Undeclared to their intended program of study. This will NOT affect their financial aid for next year once they change their major.
If you have questions concerning Financial Aid at ICC, you may call Beth McClain (694-5323 or bmcclain@icc.edu).

Logan is remembered by his classmates
EHS students painted their shoes yellow in honor of their classmate Logan Sauder on Wednesday. Logan will always be remembered by the bright yellow and green shoes that he wore to school on a regular basis.
Logan Sauder visitation and funeral arrangements
Thursday night is the visitation in Roanoke from 3-7 pm at the funeral home. Friday is the funeral service at Eureka Bible Church at 10:00 am. CUSD #140 will be offering a bus service from the high school for students and teachers on Friday. Everyone will board the bus after first hour and return to school directly after the service. Students will need to have their parents call in by the end of the school day on Thursday to let the attendance office know who will be gone either all day on Friday or miss just the couple of classes. The funeral home has requested an approx. number of students and staff that will be attending so they can reserve space. They would also like us to transport as many people as possible from the high school to reduce the amount of cars needing a place to park. Please keep the Sauder family in your prayers!
