Eureka FFA Family Potluck

The Eureka FFA hosted a family cookout for this year’s members, at the Upper Eureka Lake Pavilion last Thursday night, August 26, 2010. It was a great turn out with kids and adults of all ages. The FFA provided hot dogs and brats, while the families brought lots of tasty side dishes and deserts. From fun interactive games, to listening to the officer’s share a little about what the Eureka FFA has meant to them, everyone had a enjoyable time and ate lots of scrumptious food!

At the present time PASS is not working. Family Access, part of our new Skyward Program, is in the "construction" process. Thanks for bearing with us until this is up and working.

EHS welcomes Mrs. Schrepfer

We would like to introduce Marilyn Schrepfer as the new assistant secretary at EHS.  She will be working out of the high school main office and her duties include maintaining the master facility calendar, operating the activity fund, and organizing the daily announcements.

EHS staff members participate in St. Jude run

Thanks to Curt Whisker, Dave Tapp, and Kim Willi for participating the Run for St. Jude. Some of the members ran over 20 miles for this great cause.  Also a big thanks to all of the staff and students that turned out at Eureka Lake to support them.

Illinois Consumer Education Proficiency Test (ICEPT) discontinued

Public Act 96-1061 removed a provision requiring the state to offer a consumer education proficiency test that allowed a pupil to be excused from the requirement that he or she receives consumer education instruction. Therefore, ICEPT is no longer offered.

EHS Supports St. Jude Telethon

• Several EHS students will be participating in the St. Jude Telethon during the teen hour beginning at 11:30 p.m. on August 7, 2010.
• Twelve people are representing the Eureka Community on the Bloomington to Peoria Run for St. Jude on August 7, 2010.  Come gather at the entrance to the Upper Lake Park at 1:00 p.m. to support the over 200 runners coming through at about 1:45 p.m.

Dance wins summer competition

The Eureka High School Varsity Competitive Dance Team recently attended a Universal Dance Association Camp (UDA) at Illinois State University on July 6-9. The team earned two trophies, qualifying them for National Competition in Orlando, Florida. The EHS Dance Team competed in small varsity with a jazz routine, earning first place. Twenty-three teams competed in both small and large varsity. The EHS Dance Team also earned a Superior Trophy, which double qualified them for Nationals. In the eleven years Rebecca Hack has coached the Dance Team, they have qualified for National Competition nine times. They have earned second and third places trophies, but never a first place qualification. Senior, Allicia Mooberry, also earned her third UDA All-American or All-Star Award. To earn this honor, dancers learn a routine at UDA Camp consisting of Jazz, Pom, and Hip Hop. All-American Candidates are required to choreograph two additional eight counts and perform the routine in front of judges on the third day of UDA Camp. The Competitive Dance Team is coached by Rebecca Hack and Ashleigh Hadfield.

EHS library gets new carpet tiles installed

Thanks to all of the building custodians and summer workers who helped install the carpet tiles in the EHS library.

EHS girls track team brings home the hardware from State meet

Congratulations to the girls for winning the 3rd place trophy at the State Track Meet Saturday. Winning State Championships in their respective events and bring more road signs to Eureka were: Kalla Gold - 400m dash Her time of 56.60 is a new school record 4x200 Relay - Shelby Kupferschmid, Elly Vance, Jacey Hartman, Natalie Puent Their time of 1:44.17 is a new school record and missed the state record by 4 tenths of a second. 4x400 Relay - Natalie Puent, Jacey Hartman, Kelsey Holman, Kalla Gold Their time of 3:57.13 is a new school record and missed the state record by 2 tenths of a second. Also scoring and medaling for Eureka were: 2nd 4x100 Relay - Shelby Kupferschmid, Elly Vance, Natalie Puent, Kalla Gold Their time of 49.63 is a new school record. 4th High Jump - Kelsey Holman 9th tie High Jump - Kayla Stephens

EHS Speech and Drama All Academic Team

For the sixth year in a row, the Varsity Eureka Speech and Drama Team has earned the honor of being an IHSA All Academic Team for having a 3.0 gpa. This year's team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.73 throughout its season. This is only the 6th year for the award by the IHSA and the team has earned it all six years. Making up the varsity team are (front) Erik Slingerland, Mark Crenshaw, Brett Roth & Emily Rhoades (captains), Savannah Boisseau, and (back) Derek Jennings, Brad Zehr, Caleb Graber, Melissa Raney, and Gretchen Schlossler.

Community Writing by College Prep English

College Prep students ended the semester with creative projects using writing to promote Relay For Life and P2D2, the Safe Drug Disposal program in Woodford County.

ICC news

All dual credit students who have applied for financial aid at ICC have received letters “Terminating” their financial aid. This is because we have all dual credit students use “Undeclared Major” on their ICC application.

They need to only change their major. They should come to one of the ICC campuses to do this. They may also e-mail Brandy Moore (brandy.moore@icc.edu) asking that their major be changed from Undeclared to their intended program of study. This will NOT affect their financial aid for next year once they change their major.

Tanner moves to NASCAR

Tanner Whitten , a junior at EHS, has moved up from USAC sprint car racing to the NASCAR Whelen Series.  In  his second race of the year he placed 3rd.   If you get a chance check out his web-site at www.tannerwhittenracing.com .  Click on the Media & Videos tab to view his recent races.  He could always use another fan in the stands!

Mr. Goebel wins award

Congratulations to Mr. Goebel for winning the IPA Assistant Principal of the Year award for the Central Illinois Valley region.

EHS competes in IHSA bass fishing sectional

Congratulations to the bass fishing team , who was lead by Forrest Punke to an 8th place finish out of 26 teams at the IHSA sectional at Evergreen Lake .

Speech and Drama Students Present Plays

The Eureka High School Speech II Class, instructed by Mrs. Diana Sluder, entertained the elementary students at Congerville, Goodfield, and Davenport Grade Schools with children's plays on April 22 & 23.
This year marks the 25th year that the Speech and Drama students have presented plays to District 140 students. Plays in the tour included "The Emperor's New Suit" and "Rumplestiltskin".
Students in the class are Alex Cooper, Alyssa Girardi, Jacob Hirstein, Derek Jennings, Wesley Johnson, Carson Mack, Erin Martin, Brianna Pierson, Molly Romersberger, Anne Schaidle, Taylor Schulz, Shelby Shaw, Lauren Van Houwe, and Emily Williams.

Hope Week Coin War Champs

Throughout Hope Week, the first hour classes participated in a Coin War against each other to raise money for St. Jude. The winning class was Mrs. Aaron's first hour Sophomore English Class, who collected an astonishing total of $722.80. Her class was dedicated to winning the Coin War in honor of their fellow first hour classmate, Logan Sauder.

Rhea Keller performance

Rhea Keller, a junior at EHS, recently performed with the Youth Symphony Orchestra in a collaboration with Peoria Ballet called Youthful Fusion to celebrate the artistic and musical talents of local area youth.  She’s been in rehearsals since September of last year for two shows, Nutcracker and Youthful Fusion.  She dances on average 17 hrs. per week, with rehearsals it adds approximately 9 more hours (totaling 24-26 hrs. per week of training and rehearsal time). EHS is proud to call you one of our own!

Matt Schaidle wins SAR scholarship

Eighteen Central Illinois high school students were recognized during the 11th annual scholarship awards banquet hosted by the Gen. Joseph Bartholomew Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The Good Citizenship and Scholarship Banquet was Thursday at Bloomington Country Club.  The 2010 scholarship winner of $1,000 is Matthew Schaidle, Eureka High School, who will attend the U.S. Naval Academy, to study aerospace or nuclear engineering.  The program included a keynote speech by David Arnold, president of Eureka College, and presentation of pins and certificates to Good Citizenship award winners from high schools in McLean and Woodford counties.  Students were nominated by their teachers and administrators based on citizenship, character and scholarship. The SAR scholarship is from a trust fund established in 1999 by Arthur M. King through the Bartholomew chapter.
