Congratulations to the Eureka High School Varsity Scholastic
Bowl team for placing second in the Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC)
Scholastic Bowl Tournament Saturday, November 17th, at Bradley University.
The team defeated Peoria Heights, Beardstown, Henry-Senachwine, Williamsfield,
and Morton to advance to the quarter finals. They went on to defeat Peoria
Christian and Peoria Notre Dame to make it to the Championship round against
Richwoods. The match was tied at 210
points each coming in to the last toss-up question. Richwoods was just a little faster on the
buzzer giving them the victory. The final score was 230 to 210. The team will
receive a check for $300 for their second place finish! Colin Dewald was named to the All-Tournament Team
after answering 21 toss-ups by the end of the 5 round. He went on to answer a total of 32 for the
day! He will be one of 4 students on a
team representing central Illinois in the National Academic World Quest
Competition held in Washington DC this coming April. The cost of this trip will be covered by
PAWAC. Other team members helping lead
EHS to second place were Ross Hettinger (Captain), Jesse Wilkins, Andrew Nason,
Erik Slingerland, Corey Dewald (11 toss-ups), and Mitch Kuntz (17 toss-ups). PAWAC is a non-profit, non-partisan
organization devoted to promoting a better understanding of world affairs among
the people of central Illinois by sponsoring a variety of public programs and
fostering a cooperative educational approach to world problems.
EHS also fielded a Varsity “B” team
Saturday. This team sported a 4-1 record
for the day defeating the “B” teams from Peoria Heights, Washington,
Beardstown, and Notre Dame. They lost an extremely close match to Dee-Mack. Team members included Mitch Kuntz (Captain),
Corey Dewald, Nathan Sylvester, Marlo Glass, Steven Slingerland, and Mitchell
Lilienthal. Scholastic Bowl is coached
by Brian Bill and Charles Atteberry.
