EHS Scholastic Bowl

Congratulations to the Eureka High School Varsity Scholastic Bowl team for placing second in the Peoria Area World Affairs Council (PAWAC) Scholastic Bowl Tournament Saturday, November 17th, at Bradley University. The team defeated Peoria Heights, Beardstown, Henry-Senachwine, Williamsfield, and Morton to advance to the quarter finals. They went on to defeat Peoria Christian and Peoria Notre Dame to make it to the Championship round against Richwoods.  The match was tied at 210 points each coming in to the last toss-up question.  Richwoods was just a little faster on the buzzer giving them the victory. The final score was 230 to 210. The team will receive a check for $300 for their second place finish!  Colin Dewald was named to the All-Tournament Team after answering 21 toss-ups by the end of the 5 round.  He went on to answer a total of 32 for the day!  He will be one of 4 students on a team representing central Illinois in the National Academic World Quest Competition held in Washington DC this coming April.  The cost of this trip will be covered by PAWAC.  Other team members helping lead EHS to second place were Ross Hettinger (Captain), Jesse Wilkins, Andrew Nason, Erik Slingerland, Corey Dewald (11 toss-ups), and Mitch Kuntz (17 toss-ups).  PAWAC is a non-profit, non-partisan organization devoted to promoting a better understanding of world affairs among the people of central Illinois by sponsoring a variety of public programs and fostering a cooperative educational approach to world problems.

EHS also fielded a Varsity “B” team Saturday.  This team sported a 4-1 record for the day defeating the “B” teams from Peoria Heights, Washington, Beardstown, and Notre Dame. They lost an extremely close match to Dee-Mack.  Team members included Mitch Kuntz (Captain), Corey Dewald, Nathan Sylvester, Marlo Glass, Steven Slingerland, and Mitchell Lilienthal.  Scholastic Bowl is coached by Brian Bill and Charles Atteberry.
