Sophomore English Students Hear Holocaust Survivor Speak

On Tuesday, April 9th, sophomore English 2 students in Ms. Lowe, Mrs. Roorda, and Mr. Streit's classes traveled to Charter Oak Primary School in Peoria to hear Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal Lazan speak. A group of roughly 400 students and faculty from surrounding schools was in attendance to listen to Lazan speak about her experiences as a Jew during the Holocaust and after the war. Eureka students read Lazan's book, "Four Perfect Pebbles" in March, so it was especially fitting to hear her speak in person after reading her story. Lazan's inspirational message of determination and hope truly impacted all who attended. Marion herself gave the challenge to her listeners to seek peace and tolerance in every relationship, so that the tragic events of history are never repeated.

Science Extravaganza 2013

On Saturday, March 9 over 100 students from Davenport, Goodfield, and Congerville grade schools spent the morning with the Eureka High School Science Club. The young scientists were able to participate in many science related activities including learning a bit about the space shuttle programs followed by shooting off rockets outside, interacting with animals from the Glen Oak Zoo, making snot and learning of the importance of mucous within the body. The elementary students were able to make oobleck and walk across a baby pool filled with this liquid – that has characteristics of a solid! It was a day filled with experiencing science first hand – and having fun at the same time!
Students participating in the Science Extravaganza had the opportunity to experience science experiments first-hand! In this activity the young scientists made “elephant toothpaste” and watched a mini-explosion of bubbles!
The Glen Oak Zoomobile session had students interacting with an armadillo, cockroaches from Madagascar and more!
In another demonstration, the children were able to walk across a “liquid” – Non-Newtonian matter, or oobleck was prepared in a baby pool – if you run really fast you can step on the material but if you wait too long you sink! Students were then able to make their own oobleck and take it home.
In another experiment the young scientists made snot that glowed under UV light, and learned about why the body makes this nasty, but necessary substance!

At another location, the students were able to dissect a squid and write with the ink inside!

HOPE Week at EHS

HOPE Week has not only demonstrated the kindness and generosity of people in our community, but also the power of working together and uniting.  This power is moving!  Not only has HOPE Week spread all over the country, but its power has been demonstrated through various acts.  For example, we had someone donate their memorial money to our HOPE Week!  We have had anonymous donators give significant amounts of money, we have had so many students ranging from 2 years old to 19 years old give their own money and sacrifice things they wanted to buy with that saved money, we have had students keep their change for the entire year, and so much, much more.

I want my children to live in a world like this where people make personal sacrifices for the betterment of the human kind in whatever capacity they are passionate about. This is why HOPE Week and the Dax Locke Foundation have changed my life.  It is my hope that through the actions of this week that students will forever remember the feeling of giving and helping others!

Thank you first and foremost to Julie for allowing us to be a part of this cause, thank you to the amazing HOPE Week board, to StuCo, to Mr. Wherley, all the administration/faculty/staff and students at each school!  Thank you to EMS for raising $2583.50, Davenport for raising $2,675.18, Congerville for raising $606.18, Goodfield for raising $1355.01, Jacob’s Ladder Child Care for raising $1717.00, Eureka College for raising $231.00 and Eureka High School for bringing in all the rest!!  The top three events this year were Coin Wars with $5492.80 in FOUR days, the Walk A Thon bringing in $3123.97, and the first annual 3on3 basketball tournament bringing in $1752.37 for a grand total of $27839.79!!    WOW!
